Testing the Sinclair Valley Skater Dress

Y’all, this is my FIRST test of 2020 and my first time testing for Sinclair Patterns! Introducing the Valley Skater Dress! I don’t think I’ve ever made a skater dress before, and I’m actually loving the style. Did I mention the pattern is FREE?

One of the reasons I love Sinclair, is the sizing and height options. Every pattern comes in three heights and fits hips 33.9″ to 63″. With the tall version of the pattern, I don’t have to add height! I usually have to grade bust to hip and that’s it. I’ve previously written about Sinclair Pattern’s Harper Cardigan and the Nova Raglan.

Here in the desert, we’re already coming up on warm weather, so I decided to sew up the tank version. There are multiple sleeve options including tank, short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, long sleeves, and a cute lantern elbow sleeve. The tank version is banded, for a clean finish.

The Valley Skater also comes with THREE necklines. I chose the scoop neckline, which I really like for this more casual look. There is also a crew neck and boatneck option, which I’ll probably save for fancier occasions. I like how the back has full coverage to hide any bra straps.

The bodice is fitted for great shaping. The waistband is fully lined and hits at the natural waist. I like having the option of adding an accent color of fabric here! The half circle skirt (or peplum!) has two pleats in the front and back for a nice finish. I don’t wear many peplums, so I opted for the full dress for more wear.

Last but not least… pockets! There are inseam pockets included in the pattern. They are the perfect size, also! Big enough for phones AND your preschooler’s trinkets. 🙂

I used a thicker fabric than most of the other testers. This is a Cotton Lycra French Terry from my stash. It has great stretch and recovery. The only tough part was going over where the pockets and pleats met on the waistband with my serger. For the accent, I used an athletic fabric from Bow Button Fabrics.

I really like how well Sinclair patterns are drafted. The Valley Skater is no different… and it’s a FREE pattern! I will definitely be making more of these next fall/winter when we’ll hopefully be out and about more. 🙂

As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments! Thanks for stopping by!

Cheers!
Caitlin
