E&M Around the Block-KIDS!

About a year ago, I tested the Around the Block Hoodie pattern. That post is here. I recently had the opportunity to sew up the kids version-and it is so cute! The Little and I spent nearly 45 minutes picking out fabric for this, but he is so happy with the results (and so am I). Having a three year old who knows exactly what he wants to wear is so much fun-most of the time. 🙂

He measured into the 3T, but I wanted to be sure the top would last all season, so I decided to size up. Plus, this way it works well for layering as well! I almost shortened it just slightly, but in the end kept it the normal length just in case he hits a growth spurt.

The black fabric is from Macaloo Textiles and is an amazing quality black cotton lycra; so soft with amazing drape. The panda cactus fabric is from the same source through a company no longer around. I’ve been holding onto it for a very long time and finally decided to cut into it since that is what the Little requested.

The Around the Block Hoodie has such fun colorblocking. the asymmetrical sleeves give the top a unique look that set it apart from other colorblocked hoodies. I had a hard time deciding where to place the black and where to place the panda fabric, but ultimately decided I wanted the “stripe” in the middle to pop with the pandas. I left the waistband and sleeve cuffs black. I also added the panda fabric to the inside of the hood.

My son was so excited when the hoodie was finished! I finished it in time to head to a birthday party down at the park by our house. He received a couple of compliments on it, too. 🙂

This was my first time making him a top with inseam pockets. I chose to use scraps of rayon spandex so they were a touch thinner than the CL. I love saving scraps to use for pockets! The pockets do like to hang outside, so I ended up tacking the edge of the pocket to the seam of the waistband. This way they stay put and he won’t lose any little treasures that he puts in them. I ended up omitting the drawstring and patches.

He has been asking me for some purple pants with no pockets, so I decided to sew him up a pair of Fly Pants, no pockets (I had previously sewn up this pattern here). These are such a quick sew and fit him pretty well. I like this pattern because the legs are hemmed instead of cuffed-which most of his pants are cuffed. This fabric is the Mulberry Cotton Lycra from Macaloo Textiles. He loves this color so much and they pair well with his new hoodie.

The best part? The Around the Block Hoodies in both kids AND adults is on sale for Wacky Wednesday this week for only $1! I was hoping to get one sewn up for myself, but unfortunately didn’t get around to it. Check out the other Wacky Wednesday Patterns here.
