When I first saw this pattern, I thought the shorts were so cute! I have been looking for more patterns to use up some of my athletic scraps, and this one is perfect! I have not seen many waistbands around like these shorts have and was excited at the opportunity to sew them up.
The Be Active Shorts by Ellie & Mac are on sale for $1 today for Wacky Wednesday! And, all patterns are on sale for 50% off all month long for back to school. A great time to snatch up those EM patterns you’ve been eyeing!
For my first go with this pattern, I opted to use some leftover circular knit from Phee Fabrics for the main fabric, and this athletic fabric from Boho Fabrics for the accent on the bottoms. I knew the fabrics had good drape and would look like basketball shorts once sewn up!
I decided to go with a 3T, even though the Little technically measured into the 2T. I almost always size up when making me made clothing for him so that it lasts longer… kids grow fast!
The only change to the pattern I made was to add about 3/4″ to the bottom. I prefer to hem with a 1″ hem allowance, and wanted to make sure I didn’t lose any length. I have found that larger hems, on both my clothing and his clothing, prevent hems flipping up to show the wrong side. The pattern calls for a 1/2″ hem allowance.
The waistband was a fun technique. I have been looking for patterns that have this look, and couldn’t quite get it right on my own. This pattern calls for three rows of 3/8″ elastic in individual casings-duh! It works so well, that I may have to copy this technique for myself. When installing the elastic, the pattern tells you to close the casings after all three layers of elastic are installed. I decided to close each casing as I went, and it worked beautifully.
I really like this pattern and have another pair ready to go! I had a bit of trouble getting the color blocked edges lined up perfectly, but that is definitely maker error and trying to sew too fast. 🙂
What do you think of this pattern? Do you also have a Little that chooses their own clothes? 🙂 🙂 Boots are a favorite in this house. Even on 109 degree days!
As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments! Thanks for stopping by!
