Inspires with the Moto Hack

I’ve always loved the look of Moto pants, but never thought I’d be able to make them. Then, Greenstyle came out with the FREE Moto add-on for their Inspire Tights and I knew I had to try to make some.

The Inspires are on sale all month long for 15% off. I absolutely love how Greenstyle has started to spotlight a few patterns each month to put on sale… a great way to buy up some patterns I have had my eye on (yes, there are a few GS patterns I haven’t purchased, yet!). This month the Staple Tank and Hampton ShortsΒ (adultsΒ and kids) are also on sale!

Back on topic. I wanted to find the PERFECT fabric to make these pants with. There has been a new craze with The Styled Magnolia Custom Fabrics, especially Meagan’sΒ yoga base, and figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try this base out. I quickly ordered the black to make these Moto leggings.

Y’all, this fabric is amazing. It is really hard to describe-it’s soft, smooth, matte… and dog hair is no match to this base! I’m always covered in dog hair (thanks, Luna) hours after leaving the house… but not with this fabric!

I was kind of nervous to make these, I’m not going to lie. It was my first time with this pattern, first time with the fabric, and I was jumping straight into the Moto hack and sewing pintucks. I also was about to leave town and had limited sewing time before leaving… and these were going to be my black leggings/pants that I planned on bringing along.

I measured into the bottom of the size medium, so that’s what I made. I added a 1/4″ of length at the lengthen line in the thigh, plus about 1/2″ to the height of the waistband. The legs fit great! The waistband, though, is a bit big and unfortunately they slide down a tad. That is an easy fix, though, and I will be taking them in when I get home (or to my mom’s sewing machine if she lets me when I get there… :)). I had to take the waistband of the strides in, too, so I think sizing down the waistband in the future will help!

The instructions on the Moto add-on were very clear. I cut the width down on both panels to save fabric. I think I made them about 1/2″ wider than the medium insert pieces for each the top and bottom portion. I only had a yard of fabric and wanted to get as much use out of it as I could!

Because of my time crunch, and my not great relationship with my super basic Singer sewing machine, I opted to use Sarah’s coverstitch hack to create the Moto panels. I used a lot of Fray Check on the edges, as I was terrified the stitching would come out. This hack worked really well! Except… the top portion I made the pin tucks on the wrong side of the fabric. I didn’t realize this until after I had cut the panels out. I was out of fabric, so just rolled with it. You can tell if you look closely, but you really have to look! Lesson learned. πŸ™‚

The rest of the pattern sewed up well. The instructions are clear and easy to understand like the rest of the Greenstyle patterns. I went with the full length, basically as long as I could get the back piece with a yard of fabric.

Because the Inspires do not have the side pockets like Super Gs have, I knew I needed to create some sort of pocket. I went back to Sarah’s blog and added the zipper pocket that she wrote about here in the waistband. I love how everything is kind of eyeballed and not measured out exactly… that’s my kind of sewing! When I had the zipper portion of the back outer waistband piece finished, I placed my original back waistband pattern piece on top to make sure it all matched up and was the correct size. It worked perfectly!

I love these leggings. They are so soft and comfy with an added edgy look that I can dress up or down. I wore these traveling for nearly 24 hours and they were great! I think I like the triangle gusset more than the oval gusset of the Strides. πŸ™‚ I also was able to stash the majority of my cash into the zipper waistband so I didn’t have to worry about losing it. πŸ™‚ These pants will get a lot of use all year round, thanks to this amazing yoga fabric from The Styled Magnolia. (The Little is sporting his Pocket Shorts.)

I will be honest and say I do miss the pockets of the Super Gs and Strides, but the Inspires are amazing if you are looking for fun color blocking options or this Moto hack! Don’t forget that this add-on is FREE!

I have them paired with a Tie Back Tank. This top was my first Greenstyle love… and surprisingly I haven’t ever written a post about this pattern! This top was made over a year ago with some French Terry from my stash. πŸ™‚ Still going strong!
